Columbia-Staver Ltd has recently invested into a Helium Leak Detector to boost its liquid cold plate and advanced manufacturing test capabilities. The newly acquired Agilent PR02 leak detector was chosen because it offers leak detection capabilities with a sensitivity down to 5×10-13 Pa m3/sec helium and also allows the support of Columbia-Staver‘s high volume manufacturing capabilities through fast system response and clean-up times due to its high helium pumping speed. The new leak detector now allows Columbia-Staver to supply liquid cold plates and heat exchangers to their clients to the most demanding quality standards and compliments the existing test capabilities such as proof pressure testing and flow/ pressure drop testing.

Columbia-Staver Ltd is delighted to announce the recent investment as part of a facilities upgrade into an automated Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). The automated CMM allows Columbia-Staver the accurate and repeatable measurement of complex machined components and heat sinks and can be used for both small prototype volume components as well as its quality process for medium to high volume production components. The chosen CMM has a working area of 505mm x 705mm x 405mm and is located within Columbia-Staver’s temperature controlled metrology lab. Further, the CCM operates the latest PC-DMIS software and allows the direct usage of 3D models for measurements. The CMM allows Columbia-Staver to support their clients with their demand for high quality, high accuracy heat sinks and thermal modules.
Columbia-Staver is proud to announce the hire of Dr Andreas Engelhardt as Business Development Manager. Dr Engelhardt has 10 years’ experience in thermal management, bringing extensive knowledge in the areas of liquid cooling, heat pipe modules and thermal simulations to the existing team of highly experienced engineers. This hire is part of Columbia-Staver’s strategy to further extend the business offering heat sinks, advanced thermal assemblies, liquid cooling and CFD analysis into new and emerging markets.
As part of his role, Dr Engelhardt will utilize Columbia-Staver’s existing product range and drive these into the new markets, capitalising on the vast manufacturing experience for high and medium volume products within the Columbia-Staver, but also adding more advanced low to medium volume products to this portfolio.

Columbia-Staver have expanded their Liquid Cold plate offering to include, Vacuum Brazed and FSW (Friction Stir Welded) manufacturing technologies.
In order to offer the very best combination of Thermal Performance and cost, Columbia-Staver can design a custom cold plate to be either vacuum brazed or friction stir welded. Each technology has specific advantages.
Recent developments in fibre wick structures however, enable Columbia-Staver to offer Heat pipes with a thickness as small as 0.4mm. The body of these ultra-thin heat pipes is made of copper with pure deionised water as the working fluid. The Ultra-thin heat pipes are easily able to transfer heat fluxes in the range of 1?6 W/cm2 often required mobile-handheld chipsets.
Ultra-thin heat pipes can come in a variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses.
